About me
I’ve worked and volunteered in the charity sector and churches for 10 years, as an Operations Director, Finance Director, Trustee, Treasurer, committee Chair, and Board Secretary amongst other roles.
I love working with numbers and data, and helping others understand and interpret them, and working with boards to help them use financial information to make impactful and long-lasting decisions.
What I’ve done
My experience with multiple charities has included collaborating with Trustees, senior team members, budget holders, and finance teams, taking the time to understand their needs, priorities and hopes whilst communicating the financial options available and financial impacts of various decisions.
I’ve managed outsourced bookkeeping and accounting for multiple charities, and delivered training and consultancy to numerous charities on their financial setup, managing financial risks, handling grant income, accounting for year-end, and giving impactful internal reporting.
My paid and voluntary charity roles have given me varied experience in both internal and external audit, charity governance and compliance, IT and data protection, and HR (in which I have a CIPD Level 5 Diploma). I also have extensive experience with Church of England governance. I’ve taken more meeting minutes than I can remember and am at at ease populating, challenging, and updating risk registers and policies, ensuring these are up-to-date, fit for purpose, and appropriately robust (whilst remaining usable and relatable).
How I do it
Firstly, I’m detailed. I’m familiar with regulation, following tried and tested checklists, and making sure every penny is accounted for. I value good communication and will keep you in the loop as much as you’d like.
Secondly, I’m clear. I understand that not everyone is a “numbers person” and communicate with the right level of detail, free of jargon and unhelpful accounting terminology. My reporting isn’t pages of numbers with no context, but given in a variety of forms to suit the audience and context.
Thirdly, I’m proactive. I try my best to identify potential issues early, avoiding unwelcome surprises. I use my experience to anticipate busy periods and ensure we’re all well prepared.
Fourthly, I’m relational. I enjoy getting to know members of your team, building effective relationships, and learning how I can best support you in your roles.
When not in the world of charity finance, I enjoy spending time outdoors (including on a pair of skis), swimming, improving my piano and organ playing, and singing. Rest assured, there’s a right and proper place for spreadsheets in all of these cases.
